Habitat and Ecology: It inhabits slow-flowing hill streams in forested areas. Breeding and larval development take place in streams.

Major Threat(s): Over-collecting for human consumption is a major threat to this species. It is also probably threatened by habitat destruction and degradation, due to human settlement and smallholder farming activities.

Conservation Actions: Several protected areas occur within the species' range. There is a need to implement measures to ensure that the offtake of this species from the wild is managed in a sustainable manner. This salamander is included in several captive breeding programmes in Europe.
