Acanthagrion taxaense

Taxonomy [top]

Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family
Animalia Arthropoda Insecta Odonata Coenagrionidae

Scientific Name: Acanthagrion taxaense
Species Authority: Santos, 1965
Taxonomic Notes: Description (Santos 1965) does not fit with generic diagnosis of Acanthagrion - taxonomic revision needed (von Ellenrieder and Garrison 2007).

Assessment Information [top]

Red List Category & Criteria: Critically Endangered B1ab(iii) ver 3.1
Year Published: 2009
Date Assessed: 2006-12-21
Assessor(s): von Ellenrieder, N.
Reviewer(s): Clausnitzer, V. & Paulson, D. (Odonata Red List Authority)
Known only from type locality, which is currently included in a park within Rio de Janeiro city (Santos 1965). Never recorded again, and therefore considered as extinct by Machado and Brescovit (2005), but that could be due to lack of surveys designed to find it which are urgently needed. Doubtful generic placement also needs to be analyzed.

Geographic Range [top]

Range Description: Found along east coast of Rio de Janerio in Brazil; known only from type series which included 40 males and 15 females collected over a lapse of 12 years (from 1953 - 1965; Santos 1965).
Countries occurrence:
Brazil (Rio de Janeiro)
Number of Locations: 1

Population [top]

Population: Population status is not known because the species has not been seen since its description in 1965.
Current Population Trend: Unknown
Additional data:
Population severely fragmented: No

Habitat and Ecology [top]

Habitat and Ecology: Habitat includes ponds (Lagoa das Taxas, Santos 1965). Larva unknown.
Systems: Freshwater

Threats [top]

Major Threat(s): Urban development leading to habitat alteration by clearing of forest and pollution. Type locality, and only locality known so far, situated in an Ecological park (Chico Mendez) in populous Rio de Janeiro.

Conservation Actions [top]

Conservation Actions: Surveys needed to establish if species is still found at its original locality and if it is found elsewhere along eastern coast of Brazil and within protected areas.
