Endemic to Lake Malawi where it is only known from four restricted locations in the southern part of the lake.

Range Description: Endemic to Lake Malawi. Occurs at Maleri, Nankhoma and Thumbi West Islands as well as on the shores of Nankhumba Peninsula north of Monkey Bay.

Habitat and Ecology [top]

Habitat and Ecology: Occurs in shallow rocky habitats where it feeds on algae on the rock surfaces. Males are aggressive towards other fishes when courting. Males and females defend feeding territories throughout the year. Spawning occurs inside the male's cave. It remains close to the substrate.

Major Threat(s): Restricted range. Sedimentation of the rocky shore habitat. Localised over-fishing.
