Endemic to Lake Malawi where it is widespread at low densities. No major threats have been identified.

Range Description: Endemic to Lake Malawi. It occurs throughout the lake in shallow waters. It is rare in most areas except at Hai reef (Tanzania) and Chiwindi (Mozambique).
