Justification:
This species is only known from a single location at its type locality Uvinza in the middle Malagarasi with an estimated extent of occurrence less than 100 km² and area of occupancy less than 10 km². It is threatened by increasing water turbidity as a consequence of ongoing erosion throughout the watershed, and agriculture extension.

Habitat and Ecology: Rheophilic species, confined to swift running waters (De Vos and Seegers 1998). Stomach contents included numerous algae species (De Vos and Seegers 1998). A mouthbrooding species (De Vos and Seegers 1998).
