Although restricted to the shores of Lake Malawi, a recent survey suggests that P. nyasicus is not threatened at the moment (Dijkstra in press). The species is assessed as Least Concern at present, however, any changes in the habitat (conditions of Lake Malawi) will be a risk to P. nyasicus and may qualify the species for a higher category in future.
