Based on recent local information, we infer that the western subpopulations are under threat from increasing agriculture (total clearance for tobacco farms in this area) as well as from charcoal burning. This part of the taxon’s distribution area is right within the agricultural zone, which is not very heavily used at the moment but the increasing tobacco cultivation poses a clear danger to natural vegetation. The species might occur in between the two populations mapped, but based on data currently available, the species meets the criteria for listing as Endangered. The extent of occurrence is about 218 km2 and the area of occupancy under 30 km2, it is known from three locations and there is continuing decline as described above.

Threats [top]

Major Threat(s): Protected in Tongwe East Forest Reserve (two collections) and Ruaha National Park (one collection); the former locality is not particularly safe, but the latter is safe. This type of Miombo woodland in the general area is under threat of charcoal burning and under pressure for opening up new farms; the preferred crop in this area is tobacco, for which complete clearance of original vegetation is usual.  We infer a continuing decline of the quality of the habitat in the western locality.

Conservation Actions [top]

Conservation Actions: Protected in the Tongwe East Forest Reserve and Ruaha National Park, of which only the latter is effectively protected.
