A shrub endemic to Ecuador. Discovered by A. Humboldt and A. Bonpland at the beginning of the nineteenth century "in regno Quitoensis" and also collected in an unspecified locale of Cotopaxi province. Last recorded 198 years ago. No specimens of this species are housed in Ecuadorean museums. Apart from habitat destruction, no specific threats are known.
