Justification:
A shrub endemic to Andean Ecuador. Some 20 records, most of them from Pichincha province, indicate a relatively frequent taxon. Also recorded in Imbabura, northeast of Cuicocha and on the Apuela road. Not yet confirmed in any protected area. Infertile collections of Piper in Colombia's Valle state are nearly identical to P. sodiroi collections in Ecuador, so the species may not be endemic to Ecuador. Apart from habitat destruction, no specific threats are known.
