A shrub or tree endemic to Andean Ecuador, where it is widely distributed and known from at least 20 populations. Reported in the Refugio de Vida Silvestre Pasochoa and may occur in any of the upper Andean national parks. Because there is no recent review of the genus Axinaea, several specimens identified under this name may belong to other species. Apart from habitat destruction, no specific threats are known.
