A terrestrial herb endemic to Ecuador, where it is known from a single collection by R. Spruce, in 1864, on Cerro Abitagua, on the border between Pastaza and Tungurahua provinces. Spruce also collected the endemic Cremosperma auriculatum on Cerro Abitagua, and recently several endemic orchids of the genus Lepanthes were discovered in the same locale. No data exists for the size or status of the Spruce population. Apart from habitat destruction, no specific threats are known.
