A subshrub endemic to Andean Ecuador, where it is known from a single collection recorded in the Bosque Protector Otonga in 1996. The description mentions that the species grows in shady spots along streams in primary forest, and that it is abundant in the Río Esmeraldas valley. Not known to occur inside Ecuador’s protected areas network. Apart from habitat destruction, no specific threats are known.
