In the Red Data Book (Lucas and Synge 1978) Taverniera sericophylla was categorised as Extinct. However, in 1998 it was re-discovered on an isolated coastal plain some 15 km from the type locality where it occupies a narrow belt parallel with the beach. More recently it has been found on the dry foothills of the adjoining mountains. It now has an estimated area of occupancy of considerably less than 20 km². The failure to find it at its original site suggests that there has been a decline in its area of occupancy. The new coastal site was, until recently, inaccessible by road but there is now a vehicle track and there are plans for developing the coastal plain, which would severely threaten this delicate coastal habitat. However, the recent discovery of the plant on the dry foothills much reduces the perceived threat to this species. Nevertheless, it is highly palatable to livestock and therefore any increase in grazing in the area could lead to it becoming Critically Endangered in a short time period. It has recently also been reported, but not confirmed, from Erisil in the northeast of the island.
