Justification:
Listed as Endangered because its extent of occurrence is very restricted because it is endemic to Lake Kivu (2,370 km²) and all individuals are found in just five localities. A continuing decline in its extent of occurrence is inferred from the lack of recent collections anywhere in its range in the past 30 years (although possibly these surveys have not been very thorough). The population size is estimated at less than 2,500 mature individuals over the entire range. P. gonocristatus has been known to scientists for more than 55 years and yet still has only a poor representation in museum collections (only a handful of specimens are known). In addition, there are potential threats that may result in a decline in the extent and quality of its habitat and this species is not found in a protected area. Also qualifies as VU under D2.
