Assessment Information [top]

Red List Category & Criteria: Endangered A4c ver 3.1
Year Published: 2003
Date Assessed: 2003-04-30
Assessor/s: Montúfar, R. & Pitman, N.
Reviewer/s: Valencia, R., Pitman, N., Léon-Yánez, S. & Jørgensen, P.M. (Ecuador Plants Red List Authority)
Justification:
A terrestrial herb endemic to Ecuador, where it is known from two collections in the northern Andes. The first collection was in 1871 in Quito, on the Panecillo. The second collection was recorded 110 years later, in a locale close to Cotacachi. The Quito subpopulation is definitely extinct, but new subpopulations may occur in Imbabura and even in the Reserva Ecológica Cotacachi-Cayapas. The only type was apparently destroyed in the Berlin herbarium during the Second World War. No specimens of this species are housed in Ecuadorian museums. Habitat destruction is the only known threat to the species.
