A shrub endemic to Ecuador, where it is known from six subpopulations in the central Andes. Not known to occur inside Ecuador’s protected areas network, but one subpopulation has been reported near the Parque Nacional Podocarpus. Listed as Endangered in the 1997 Red List. Habitat destruction is the only known threat to the species.
