An epiphytic bromeliad endemic to Ecuador where it is known only from the type, recently collected at kilometer 41.5 of the Loja-Zamora road. The locale is inside the Parque Nacional Podocarpus. Specific threats for the species are unknown.

Range Description: Vriesea lutheri is endemic to Ecuador. It is kown only from one population in Zamora-Chinchipe province.
