Justification:
Basselinia favieri is a solitary, subcanopy to canopy endemic tree palm of New Caledonia restricted to the east slope of Mt. Panié in the northeastern part of Grande Terre, from Mont Panié to Ponandou. Basselinia favieri occurs in dense humid forest on volcano-sedimentary substrate from 300-1,000 m asl. Main identified threats are linked to seed predtaion by rats and habitat damage by wild pigs. With an area of occupancy (AOO) and extent of occurrence (EOO) equal to 20 and 114 km² respectively, with two locations and considering the low levels of regeneration, B. favieri is considered Endangered (EN) B1ab (iii,v)+2ab(iii,v) with a decline of habitat quality and number of mature individuals.

Use and Trade: Seeds are collected for sale to the international horticultural trade.

Threats [top]

Major Threat(s): Main identified threats are linked to seed destruction by rats and habitat damage by wild pigs.

Conservation Actions [top]

Conservation Actions: Basselinia favieri is protected by legislation in Province Nord and it occurs in one protected area: Mont Panié. Prospection in Ponandou and Massif des Lèvres is highly recommended to better evaluate its conservation status and it is also recommended to list the species in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). This species would benefit from ex situ and in situ emergency conservation actions as well as invasive species control.
