Taxonomy [top]

Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family
Animalia Mollusca Gastropoda Littorinimorpha Hydrobiidae

Scientific Name: Bythiospeum diaphanum (Michaud, 1831)
Taxonomic Notes: Several subspecies have been described in the south of France by Girardi (2002, 2003, 2009). However, Bertrand (2004) states that, in the state-of-the-art, B. diaphanum (sensus stricto) is limited to the south of Jura (France). The genus Bythiospeum requires a global taxonomic revision.

Subspecies:
B. diaphanum alpillense Girardi 2009
B. diaphanum fernetense Girardi 2009
B. diaphanum luberonense Girardi 2009
B. diaphanum meyrarguense Girardi 2009
B. diaphanum michaellensis  Girardi 2002
B. diaphanum montbrunense Girardi 2009
B. diaphanum regalonense Girardi 2009
B. diaphanum sarriansense Girardi 2009

Only the nominate subspecies Bythiospeum diaphanum diaphanum is being considered in this assessment, as the other subspecies are taxonomically doubtful and might not belong to this species.

Assessment Information [top]

Red List Category & Criteria: Near Threatened (Regional assessment) ver 3.1
Year Published: 2010
Date Assessed: 2010-02-05
Assessor(s): Prié, V.
Reviewer(s): Gargominy, O., Cuttelod, A. & Seddon, M.B.
Justification:
Only the nominate subspecies Bythiospeum diaphanum diaphanum is being considered in this assessment, as the other subspecies are taxonomically doubtful and might not belong to this species. This taxon is relatively range restricted, as only three localities are given in the literature (Bertrand 2004). However, it is likely that it is slightly more widespread and it is therefore considered as Near Threatened, rather than endangered.

Threats [top]

Major Threat(s): Subterranean habitats are vulnerable to water pollution from domestic (sewage and run-off) or agricultural (nutrient loads, herbicide and pesticides) sources. Water absorption may be another threat if the aquifers are overexploited.
