Range Description: The distribution of this species is disjunct. Occurs in central and south-west Ecuador, and in Peru in the north-west and further south in the Cordillera Blanca and Cuzco-Apurimac area.

Population [top]

Population: A forest covering 20 km² in Cuzco was completely destroyed by burning two years ago. Remaining stands are almost exclusively reduced to boulder-scree, stream ravines and rock ledges, where they are sheltered from most fires.

Habitat and Ecology [top]

Habitat and Ecology: Subpopulations occur in humid montane forest above 3,000 m. Both this species and P. incana are being logged inside Huascarán National Park.
