Scientific Name: Zingiber monophyllum
Species Authority: Gagnep.
Taxonomic Notes: Zingiber monophyllum and Z. ellipticum were suspected to be synonymous based on herbarium records, but recent observation of flowering material of Z. monophyllum at Cuc Phuong National Park, confirmed that they are two different species (H.D.Tran pers. obs. 2011).

Justification:
The area of occupancy is about 75 km², and the species is only known from two locations and there is continuing decline in numbers of mature individuals because of illegal collection. The species is therefore assessed as Endangered under criterion B2. It has already disappeared from one of the known localities.

Geographic Range [top]

Range Description: So far this taxon is recorded only in northern Viet Nam. The habitat at the syntype locality (Kien Khe) has been destroyed by agricultural activity. Recorded from 150 up to 600 m asl. It occurs at two locations with an area of occupancy of 75 km².

Population: A locally common species.

Habitat and Ecology: Grows in shady undergrowth of evergreen broadleaved mixed forest.

Use and Trade: The species is illegally collected by visitors to Cuc Phuong National Park; they remove the whole plant to grow it as an ornamental.

Major Threat(s): Habitat destruction and illegal collection are the main threats to this taxon. The two extant subpopulations are both in protected areas.
