Salmo akairos is endemic to Lake Ifni (less than 1 km2) in Morocco. The species spawns in the lake as it lacks suitable tributaries. The lake is 2,300 m high and has no permanent human habitation in its catchment, although the sparse vegetation is grazed by sheep and goats in the summer. The lake supplies water for extensive terrace agriculture around a village below the lake. There is no available evidence to suggest any current threats to the species, but there is a potential threat from the agriculture (water abstraction), introduced trout and sport fishing (M. Kraïem pers .comm. 2007).
