IUCN Red List Assessor Training Workshops

To be able to prepare high-quality assessments for publication on the IUCN Red List, Red List Assessors must first understand the Red List assessment process, the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria, and the supporting information requirements for assessments.

For regional and national Red Lists based on IUCN methodology, Red List Assessors must also understand the rules for applying the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria at sub-global levels.

Red List Assessor training is essential for new Assessors. Red List training tools and materials also serve as useful reminders for experienced Red List Assessors.

One method IUCN uses to provide Red List Assessor training is the training workshop. IUCN has developed a 3-4 day workshop curriculum that uses an interactive approach to teach Assessors how to prepare high-quality assessments using the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria.

Workshop Agenda

The IUCN Red List Training workshop format includes a series of short presentations interspersed with practical sessions to give participants the best opportunity to understand how to prepare high-quality extinction risk assessments using the IUCN Red List methodology.

The duration and content of the workshop varies depending on whether Assessors need to learn only about preparing global Red List assessments, or whether they will also be preparing regional or national assessments. A four day workshop typically covers the following topics:

  • Introduction to IUCN and the IUCN Red List

  • Terms used in the IUCN Red List Criteria and their definitions

  • Data quality and uncertainty

  • IUCN Red List Categories

  • IUCN Red List Criteria

  • Assessing the global Red List status of species for publication on the IUCN Red List

  • Assessing the status of species within a specific area for publication in regional or national Red Lists

  • Supporting information requirements for IUCN Red List assessments

  • Mapping standards for IUCN Red List assessments

  • Red List data storage and management: the IUCN Species Information Service (SIS)

Workshop Presentations

The following presentations are used in IUCN Red List Assessor Training workshops. These are best used within the context of the training workshop (i.e., alongside the training exercises and case studies). However, they are provided here as MS Power Point shows to download and use as background information for Red List demonstrations or to include within general presentations about the IUCN Red List.

For more information on these presentations and their use, please contact the IUCN Red List Unit.
