Taxonomic Notes:	According to Woods in Wilson and reeder (1993) columbianus is only know from Holocene fossils from Cuba and may be from the genus Capromys. G. Amori (pers. comm. 2001) advises retaining this species, agreeing with MacPhee and Flemming (1999).

Justification:

Woods (in Wilson and Reeder 1993) states that this species is known only from Holocene fossils from Cuba. However, MacPhee and Flemming (1999) note that remains have been found in association with species introduced into the area after 1500 AD.
