Taxonomic Notes:

There are strong arguments that this is conspecific with E. burchelli. If this is widely accepted, then E. quagga quagga is the correct name for this taxon, while the other subsp. is E. quagga burchelli.

Justification:

MacPhee and Flemming (1999) consider this species to be extant as E. burchelli. There is still taxonomic debate about the relationship between E. quagga and E. burchelli. The IUCN SSC Equid Specialist Group recognizes the quagga as distinct from the currently accepted subspecies within E. burchelli, although it may represent a seventh subspecies of E. burchelli. The quagga is recorded here as a separate species until its taxonomic status is resolved.
