Taxonomic Notes:

This taxon is sometimes treated under the specific name asinus, however, this is considered to be the name applied to the domestic form and is so generally rejected in favour of africanus.

The author name was in as (Fitzinger, 1857). Groves (Equid Action Plan) notes authority as Heuglin and Fitzinger 1866.
