Justification:
Epinephelus perplexus is known only from the holotype, which was taken in deep water. The species may have a wider distributional range, but presently nothing is known of the population or the biology of this species. Further assessments are suggested as data become available.

Habitat and Ecology: Epinephelus perplexus is known only from the holotype collected by the FIV 'Endeavour'. Collected between 129 to 137 m. The absence of additional specimens may indicate that this species normally inhabits deeper waters. The size of the holotype specimen is 465 mm SL/565 mm TL.
