Justification: Listed as Endangered because its extent of occurrence is less than 5,000 km² its distribution is severely fragmented, and there is continuing decline in the extent and quality of its coastal habitat.

Geographic Range

Range Description: This species occurs along a narrow coastal strip of approximately 250 km between Nador in northeastern Morocco and Cape Carbón in northwestern Algeria. It is also present on the Chafarinas Archipelago (Spain). It is found from sea level to 30 m asl.

Population: It is not an abundant species and is thought to be rare along its narrow coastal range.

Habitat and Ecology

Habitat and Ecology: This coastal species occurs in sandy areas, overgrown dunes with Mediterranean vegetation and pine and Eucalyptus plantations. This species can be found among and under stones. It is not known to exist in modified habitats. Females give birth to fully formed young.

Threats

Threats: Development of coastal areas for tourism and military purposes are major threats to this species. It is possibly threatened by loss of ground cover habitat, such as the collection of driftwood by local people for firewood.
