Justification:
Endemic species widespread throughout Lake Tanganyika where it is found in inshore waters over rocky substrates and lower reaches of major fast flowing rivers (area of occupancy less than 2,000 km²). Threatened by fisheries pressure, water turbidity and siltation due to erosion on watershed but no data to demonstrate a population decline.

Habitat and Ecology: Found in inshore waters of the lake over rocky substrates and in major fast flowing rivers (Eccles 1992). Feeds on varied food items collected on rocky and other firm bottoms: insects, ostracods, diatoms, worms, etc. Also feeds on aufwuchs (Eccles 1992).
