Justification: Endemic to the upper and middle Akagera River where it is found in the main channel of rivers and sometimes in lakes. Very common some decades ago, it has since become rather rare. There is evidence for a >50% decline in population (Ntakimazi 1985). Fisheries pressure, wetlands regression and increased water turbidity due to erosion on watershed are the main threats for this species (Ntakimazi 1985). |
