The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species

Acanthobrama telavivensis

 – Extinct in the Wild

Taxonomy

Kingdom: ANIMALIA
Phylum: CHORDATA
Class: ACTINOPTERYGII
Order: CYPRINIFORMES
Family: CYPRINIDAE
Scientific Name: Acanthobrama telavivensis
Species Authority: Goren, Fishelson & Trewavas, 1973

Assessment Information

Red List Category & Criteria: EW    ver 3.1 (2001)
Year Assessed: 2006
Assessor/s: Crivelli, A.J.
Evaluator/s: Goren, M., Bogutskaya, N., Erk’akan, F. & Karatash, A. (Mediterranean Workshop, Dec. 2004)
Justification: Fifty years ago, the species was very abundant. There was a sharp decline between 1950 and 1970. Then the population was stable until 1999. Drought (in 1999) resulted in the riverine habitat disappearing and the population declined almost to extinction. The last remaining individuals were taken from the remnants of the river and bred in captivity. Two subpopulations now have been released (for conservation purposes) back into the wild from this captive stock. One subpopulation has not reproduced. It is not known if the other subpopulation has reproduced yet (surveys are required). Until it can be confirmed that the second subpopulation is breeding successfully in the wild, this species is assessed as Extinct in the Wild.

Geographic Range

Range Description: This species is restricted to the coastal rivers of Israel, excluding Kishon.

Population

Population: Fifty years ago, the species was very abundant. There was a sharp decline between 1950 and 1970. Then the population was stable until 1999. In 1999 the population declined almost to extinction. A captive population was bred from individuals taken from two sites. Two populations have since been released back into the wild but it is not confirmed if at least one of these is successfully breeding.

Habitat and Ecology

Habitat and Ecology: A coastal river species.
System: Freshwater
List of Habitats:
5.1Wetlands (inland) - Permanent Rivers/Streams/Creeks (includes waterfalls)

Threats

Threats: Drought, water extraction and pollution are main threats.
List of Threats:
1.3.6Habitat Loss/Degradation - Extraction - Groundwater extraction (past)
6.3.1Pollution (affecting habitat and/or species) - Water pollution - Agriculture (past)
6.3.2Pollution (affecting habitat and/or species) - Water pollution - Domestic (past)
7.1Natural disasters - Drought (past)
9.1Intrinsic factors - Limited dispersal (past)
9.9Intrinsic factors - Restricted range (past)

Conservation Actions

Conservation Actions: No conservation measures in place in the wild. Captive population is held in an artificial situation (laboratory) based on stock taken from two rivers (M. Goren, pers. comm).

1.2.2.2Policy-based actions - Legislation - Implementation - National level (needed)
3.2Research actions - Population numbers and range (in place, needed)
3.3Research actions - Biology and Ecology (in place)
3.4Research actions - Habitat status (in place, needed)
3.5Research actions - Threats (in place)
