Justification: Widespread throughout Lake Tanganyika and lower reaches of its majors affluent rivers where it has no known major widespread threats.

Geographic Range

Range Description: Endemic to Lake Tanganyika where it also enters the deltas and lower reaches of its major affluent rivers, including the Rusizi and Malagarasi.

Population

Population: This species represent one of the most common inshore species found in the markets in the northern end of Lake Tanganyika. There has been a reported decline in the catches over the last 10 years.

Habitat and Ecology

Habitat and Ecology: Found in the coastal areas around lake Tanganyika (max depth: 10 m) over sand habitats, and in river mouths and lagoons. Feeds on diatoms, filamentous blue-green algae and detritus grazed from submerged surfaces.
