 – Least Concern

Taxonomy

Kingdom: ANIMALIA
Phylum: CHORDATA
Class: AMPHIBIA
Order: ANURA
Family: BRACHYCEPHALIDAE
Scientific Name: Brachycephalus didactylus
Species Authority: (Izecksohn, 1971)

Assessment Information

Red List Category & Criteria: LC    ver 3.1 (2001)
Year Assessed: 2004
Assessor/s: Telles, A.M. & Potsch de Carvalho-e-Silva, S.
Evaluator/s: Stuart, S., Chanson, J., Cox, N. & Young, B. (Global Amphibian Assessment Coordinating Team)
Justification: Listed as Least Concern in view of its relatively wide distribution, tolerance of a degree of habitat modification, presumed large population, and because it is unlikely to be declining fast enough to qualify for listing in a more threatened category.

Geographic Range

Range Description: This species is known from forests in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Countries: Native:

Brazil

Population

Population: It is a difficult species to find because it is so small but it is thought to be relatively common.
Population Trend: Down

Habitat and Ecology

Habitat and Ecology: It occurs on the forest leaf-litter in primary and secondary forest, where it also lays its eggs. It breeds by direct development. It has not been recorded from anthropogenic habitats, and has only been observed in good quality secondary forest.
System: Terrestrial; Freshwater; Marine
List of Habitats:
1.6Forest - Subtropical/Tropical Moist Lowland

Threats

Threats: This species is threatened by habitat loss due to agriculture and infrastructure development.
List of Threats:
1.1.1.2Habitat Loss/Degradation - Agriculture - Crops - Small-holder farming (ongoing)
1.4.1Habitat Loss/Degradation - Infrastructure development - Industry (ongoing)
1.4.2Habitat Loss/Degradation - Infrastructure development - Human settlement (ongoing)

Conservation Actions

Conservation Actions: More research into the species' Extent of Occurrence, ecological requirements and population status is needed. Conservation and maintenance of its habitat is also required. Its range includes several protected areas.
