Assessment Information

Red List Category & Criteria: CR C2a(i,ii)    ver 3.1 (2001)
Year Assessed: 2004
Assessor/s: Mickleburgh, S., Hutson, A. & Bergmans, W. (GMA Africa Workshop)
Evaluator/s: Hutson, A., Racey, P. & Mickleburgh, S. (Chiroptera Red List Authority)
Justification: It is uncertain whether the distribution is less than 100 km², but there appears to be less than 50 individuals in the subpopulations and the population is declining in extent of occurence and area of occupancy.
History:
1988-Endangered (IUCN Conservation Monitoring Centre 1988)
1990-Endangered (IUCN 1990)
1994-Endangered (Groombridge 1994)
1996-Critically Endangered (Baillie and Groombridge 1996)

Geographic Range

Range Description: This Seychelles endemic is found on the islands of Silhouette, Mahe and Praslin. It is extinct on La Digue (went extinct post 1980). On Mahe only found in the northwest, more surveys are needed.
Countries: Native:

Seychelles

Population

Population: The total population is 50 to 100 individuals. Over the last 30 years there has been a reduction on at least Mahe and Praslin, in both area of occupancy and density.
Population Trend: Down

2.2Invasive alien species (directly affecting the species) - Predators (ongoing)
10.1Human disturbance - Recreation/tourism (future)

Conservation Actions

Conservation Actions: A management plan has been developed, but it may not have been implemented. There are proposals for surveys.
List of Conservation Actions:
1.1.1Policy-based actions - Management plans - Development (in place)
3.2Research actions - Population numbers and range (needed)
