Assessment Information [top]

Red List Category & Criteria: Data Deficient     ver 3.1
Year Assessed: 2006
Assessor/s Burgess, G.H.
Evaluator/s: Human, B., Cavanagh, R.D., Heupel, M.R., Simpfendorfer, C.A. & Kyne, P.M. (Shark Red List Authority)
Justification:
Euprotomicroides zantedeschia is an extremely rare small pelagic shark. It is known from only two specimens, both from the South Atlantic: one from off South Africa and one from off Uruguay. Depths of capture were 458 to 641 m from a demersal trawl and 0 to 25 m near the surface. This shark is not known to enter any fishery, hence there are no apparent threats but given that it is only known from two specimens it cannot be assessed beyond Data Deficient at this time.
History:
2004 Data Deficient (IUCN 2004)

Geographic Range [top]

Range Description: Only known from two specimens, one each from the Southeast and the Southwest Atlantic.
Countries:
Native:
South Africa (Western Cape Province); Uruguay
FAO Marine Fishing Areas:
Native:
Atlantic – southeast;  Atlantic – southwest

Population [top]

Population: Unknown.
Population Trend: Unknown

Habitat and Ecology [top]

Habitat and Ecology: An epipelagic (depths of capture: 458 to 641 m from a demersal trawl and 0 to 25 m near the surface) oceanic species, the two known specimens are a 17.6 cm TL immature female and a 41.6 cm TL adult female. Reproduction assumed to be aplacental viviparous. Pectoral fin shape and orientation suggest hovering ability within the water column.

Life history parameters
Age at maturity (years): Unknown.
Size at maturity (total length): Female: 41.6 cm TL or smaller; Male: >17.6 cm TL.
Longevity (years): Unknown.
Maximum size (total length): Largest of the two known specimens: 41.6 cm TL.
Size at birth (cm): Unknown.
Average reproductive age (years): Unknown.
Gestation time (months): Unknown.
Reproductive periodicity: Unknown.
Average annual fecundity or litter size: Unknown.
Annual rate of population increase: Unknown.
Natural mortality: Unknown.
Systems: Marine

Threats [top]

Major Threat(s): None apparent. Small size and epipelagic nature may preclude it from capture in most fisheries.

Conservation Actions [top]

Conservation Actions: No current conservation actions are in place.

Like many deeper water species more information on biology, ecology and importance in fisheries are required to further assess status and future conservation needs.
