Justification: A terrestrial herb endemic to Ecuador, the subject of an intensive search in the Andes in 1998–1999. At least five subpopulations occur in the Reserva Geobotánica Pululahua, with at least 100 individuals in each subpopulation. The principal threats are agriculture, grazing and trade in the plant as an ornamental outside Ecuador, as well as human population increase inside the Pululahua reserve. The Azuay subpopulation may belong to another species (P. viridilutea; N. Oleas, pers. obs., A. Meerow, pers. comm.). If that is the case, then P. viridiflora may be confined to Pululahua. Habitat destruction is the only known threat to the species. |
