Justification:
|
A terrestrial herb endemic to Ecuador, where it is known from ten subpopulations mostly in disturbed areas and along roads in dry, inter-Andean valleys. May be affected by agriculture and grazing. Not recorded inside Ecuador’s protected areas network, but may occur inside the Reserva de Producción Faunística Chimborazo. P. schizantha var. ignea has only been collected in an area less than 100 km² near Ambato, for which reason this variety is assessed as Critically Endangered (CR B1ab(iii)). Habitat destruction is the only known threat to the species.
