Taxonomic Notes:
|
There is some taxonomic debate over the correct specific name for the plains zebra. Some have the opinion that since the quagga, E. quagga quagga, and the extinct true Burchell's zebra, E. burchelli burchelli, are now considered to have been the same taxon, the correct name for the plains zebra should be E. quagga and not E. burchelli. If this opinion is followed, Equus burchelli burchelli would be recorded as Equus quagga burchelli. The taxonomy previously used by Duncan (1992) continues to be used here by the Equid Specialist Group until the plains zebra taxonomy is resolved.
