Taxonomic Notes:
Based on available data, Patton & Hafner (1983) agreed with earlier studies (Heller, 1904; Osgood, 1929; Cabrera, 1961) that suggested O. bauri and O. galapagoensis might be considered conspecific. Musser & Carleton (1993) included O. bauri in O. galapagoensis (Dowler et al. 2000). Giovanni Amori (pers com. 2001) agrees that O. galapagoensis has two subspecies: O. g. galapagoensis and O. g. bauri.
Will be transferred to family Cricetidae.

O. g. galapagoensis was first collected on Chatham Island in 1835 by Charles Darwin. It has not been collected since (Dowler et al. 2000).

Geographic Range
Range Description:
Oryzomys galapagoensis was first collected from Chatham Island during Charles Darwin's visit to the Galapagos Islands in 1835. A second, closely related species, O. bauri from Santa Fe was described by Allen in 1892. Later studies (Heller 1904, Osgood 1929, Cabrera 1961, Patton and Hafner 1983) suggested that O. bauri and O. galapagoensis were so similar that they may be considered conspecific (Dowler et al. 2000).
