Geographic Range
Range Description:
Buceros rhinoceros is confined to the Sundaic lowlands of extreme south peninsular Thailand, Sabah, Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore (formerly), Kalimantan, Sumatra and Java, Indonesia and Brunei (uncommon), in lowland and hill forests and swamp forests, to 1,400 m. Forest destruction in the Sundaic lowlands of Indonesia has been so extensive that all primary formations are expected to disappear by 2010, and the situation is little different in Thailand and Malaysia, but the species's presence in hill forest suggests no immediate pressure from outright loss of habitat. In Borneo it is shot for food and hat feathers by local tribes. It returns to customary nest-holes, even after surrounding forest has been disturbed, and studies demonstrate that logging reduces overall numbers. CITES Appendix II.
