Taxonomic Notes:

Prior to 2000 Gorilla beringei was treated as a subspecies of Gorilla gorilla distinct from Gorilla gorilla graueri. Due to the recognition of the mountain and lowland gorillas as separate species Gorilla beringei was a new addition to the Red List at species level in 2000.
