Assessment Information [top]

Red List Category & Criteria: Lower Risk/near threatened     ver 2.3
Year Assessed: 2000
Assessor/s Simpfendorfer, C. & Burgess, G.H.
Evaluator/s: Musick, J.A. & Fowler, S. (Shark Red List Authority)
Justification:
This common tropical and subtropical species occurs in marine, estuarine and freshwater, and can penetrate long distances up large rivers. It is caught in fisheries throughout its range, but is rarely a target species. Its occurrence in estuaries and freshwater makes it very vulnerable to human impacts and habitat modification. Given this species’ habitat requirements in areas that are currently heavily impacted by human activity, its life history, and target and bycatch in many inshore fisheries, there is some concern that Bull Sharks may be threatened. Average length of Bull Sharks caught by the Natal Sharks Board have declined significantly.
