Assessment Information

Red List Category & Criteria: DD    ver 2.3 (1994)
Year Assessed: 2000
Assessor/s: Chiaramonte, G.E.
Evaluator/s: Musick, J.A. & Fowler, S. (Shark Red List Authority)
Justification: The narrowmouth catshark is restricted to the western south Atlantic and eastern south Pacific continental shelf, from Brazil to Chile, at depths of 10-359 m. Good data are available on the biology of this poorly known, albeit moderately common inshore and offshore shark, but inadequate information on the possible impacts on its populations of habitat degradation (particularly within its estuarine nursery grounds) and fisheries.
