Justification: The salmon shark is widespread in the boreal north Pacific, but its biology and life history is little known. It appears to have a very low fecundity and is probably slow to mature. As such, it may be extremely vulnerable to current bycatch pressure and to commercial fishing activity in the northwest Pacific. Commercial fishing is closed in Alaska and a management decision is pending in US Federal waters. There is a lack of catch and landing statistics and no population data for the species. |
