Assessment Information [top]

Red List Category & Criteria: Lower Risk/near threatened     ver 2.3
Year Assessed: 2000
Assessor/s Compagno, L.J.V. & Musick, J.A.
Evaluator/s: Musick, J.A. & Fowler, S. (Shark Red List Authority)
Justification:
This small, uncommon, pelagic, oceanic shark is circumtropical in distribution. Because of its small litter size and probable life history demography, it is likely vulnerable as bycatch in expanding pelagic high-seas long-line fisheries. No catch per unit effort records are available to indicate trends in population size, but a population decline from bycatch is considered probable and is predicted to continue or increase as existing massive pelagic long-lining fishing effort increases worldwide.
