Justification: The last individual of this species died on 6 January 2000 in Ordesa National Park, Spain.

Geographic Range

Range Description: Formerly found in the Spanish Pyrenees on Monte Perdido and Maladeta massif. More recently, the population was restricted to Ordesa National Park in the Aragon District of the Pyrenees.

Population

Population: Since the beginning of the twentieth century, the population never rose above 40 individuals. In 1981, the population was reported to be 30, however, in the 1990's this figure had fallen to only 10 animals and was still decreasing. The last individual (a female) died on 6 January 2000.

Habitat and Ecology

Habitat and Ecology: Capra pyrenaica preferred rocky, mountainous habitat. Its diet consisted of grass, herbs and lichens.

Threats

Threats: The reasons behind the extinction of this species are largely unknown, although a number of hypotheses have been suggested including the inability to compete well with other species for food, infections and diseases caught from domestic livestock, poaching, infertility and inbreeding problems, and climatic conditions.

Conservation Actions

Conservation Actions: The subspecies was listed as critically endangered by the IUCN in 1996 and the population was protected within Ordesa National Park.
