This species is listed as Near Threatened given an inferred population decline as a result of habitat loss and hunting which may have approached 20-25% over the past 10 years. Almost qualifies as threatened under criterion A2cd.

Geographic Range [top]

Range Description: This species has been recorded from the Gran Chaco of western Paraguay and north-western Argentina (Gardner 2005). In addition, it has been reported to occur in Mato Grosso, Brazil, on the basis of one zoological park specimen (Wetzel 1980). It has not been recorded from Bolivia.

Population: The abundance of this species is not well known. In general it is rarely sighted.

Habitat and Ecology: This largely fossorial species is restricted to undisturbed chaco-ceco (thorn forest) habitats. It is not present in cultivated areas. There is little available information on the species' life history and other biological characteristics.

Major Threat(s): This species is threatened by both habitat degradation from agricultural activity and subsistence hunting for food by local people, as well as predation by dogs.

Conservation Actions: In Argentina it has been recorded from Parque Nacional Río Pilcomayo, Parque Nacional Copo and Reserva Natural Formosa.
