Taxonomy [top]

Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family
PLANTAE TRACHEOPHYTA MAGNOLIOPSIDA ROSALES ROSACEAE

Scientific Name: Malus sieversii
Species Authority M.Roem.

Assessment Information [top]

Red List Category & Criteria: Vulnerable   A2cde   ver 3.1
Year Assessed: 2007
Assessor/s Participants of the FFI/IUCN SSC Central Asian regional tree Red Listing workshop, Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan (11-13 July 2006)
Evaluator/s: Newton, A. & Eastwood, A. (Global Tree Red List Authority)
Justification:
Faces a number of threats including loss and degradation of habitat due to agricultural expansion and development, genetic erosion (grafting of commercial varieties and hybridization) and overgrazing. In Kazakhstan its habitat has declined by over 70% in the last 30 years. Overall, it is suspected that population declines throughout its range have exceeded 30% over the last three generations. Classed as Vulnerable.
History:
1998 Vulnerable (Oldfield et al. 1998)

Geographic Range [top]

Range Description: Malus sieversii is believed to be the primary ancestor of the domesticated apple. The species is native to Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan (Lamboy et al. 1998). It also extends into China where pure stands of the species occur in the Ili River Valley in the western part of the Tianshan Mts. and on hillsides in western Junggar (National Environment Protection Bureau 1987, Li-kuo and Jian-ming 1992). Occurs between 1,100 and 1,600 m.
Countries:
Native:
China (Xinjiang); Kazakhstan; Kyrgyzstan; Tajikistan; Uzbekistan

Population [top]

Population: Declining at a rapid rate. For example, in Kazakhstan its habitat has declined by over 70% in the last 30 years.
Population Trend: Decreasing

Habitat and Ecology [top]

Habitat and Ecology: A wild relative of domesticated cultivars and therefore a globally important genetic resource.
Systems: Terrestrial

Threats [top]

Major Threat(s): Threats include loss and degradation of habitat due to agricultural expansion and development, genetic erosion (grafting of commercial varieties and hybridization) and overgrazing.
