Assessment Information

Red List Category & Criteria: CR A1abc+2cd    ver 2.3 (1994)
Year Assessed: 2000
Assessor/s: Cook, S.F. & Compagno, L.J.V.
Evaluator/s: Musick, J.A. & Fowler, S. (Shark Red List Authority)
Justification: A large species of inshore marine and freshwater sawfish that was once common in the Mediterranean and Eastern Atlantic, but has now, along with all other sawfishes, been extirpated from Europe and the Mediterranean. Its status in West Africa is unsurveyed, but it is extremely vulnerable to bycatch and is believed to be severely depleted in Africa, where elasmobranch fisheries effort has increased. Without timely intervention, there is a high probability that this sawfish will become extinct.
History:
1996-Endangered (Baillie and Groombridge 1996)
