Assessment Information

Red List Category & Criteria: VU B1ab(iii)    ver 3.1 (2001)
Year Assessed: 2006
Assessor/s: Afrotheria Specialist Group (Tenrec Section), Jenkins, P. & Andrianjakavelo, V.
Evaluator/s: Rathbun, G. (Afrotheria Red List Authority) & Sechrest, W. (Global Mammal Assessment)
Justification: Listed as Vulnerable B1ab(iii) because its extent of occurrence is less than 20,000 km², it is known from fewer than ten locations, and there is continuing decline in the extent and quality of its habitat.
History:
1996-Critically Endangered (Baillie and Groombridge 1996)

Geographic Range

Range Description: This species is known from only a few sites in northeastern Madagascar. There is some doubt about a record from Anjanaharibe-Sud Special Reserve as it was collected from an owl pellet. It has been recorded between 500 and 940 m asl.
Countries: Native:

Madagascar

Population

Population: It is known from only a few specimens and has been rarely recorded.
Population Trend: Down

Habitat and Ecology

Habitat and Ecology: It is a poorly-known species that has only been recorded in the eastern lowland rain forests. It is possibly a a semi-fossorial species which is believed to be forest dependent. The ecology of the species is not known.
System: Terrestrial
List of Habitats:
1.6Forest - Subtropical/Tropical Moist Lowland

Threats

Threats: It is threatened by deforestation and habitat fragmentation, through conversion to cultivated areas and general logging activities.
List of Threats:
1.1.1.1Habitat Loss/Degradation - Agriculture - Crops - Shifting Agriculture (ongoing)
1.3.3.1Habitat Loss/Degradation - Extraction - Wood - Small-scale subsistence (ongoing)
1.3.3.2Habitat Loss/Degradation - Extraction - Wood - Selective logging (ongoing)
1.7Habitat Loss/Degradation - Fires (ongoing)

Conservation Actions

Conservation Actions: It has been recorded from two protected areas: Ambatovaky Special Reserve and Anjanaharibe-Sud Special Reserve. It has been recorded in the future protected area of Makira. Further studies are needed into the taxonomy, distribution, population, biology, ecology and threats to this species.
